Getting Fourteen

How do I get the Fourteen app?

Fourteen is in closed testing, so it isn't publicly listed on Google Play yet. When groups open, we'll email waitlist members a link. You'd do three things:

  • Join the Fourteen testers group with the Google account on your phone.
  • Tap the link and install Fourteen.
  • Sign in and add your app.

You need to join the group first, or the link won't work for you.

Why does Fourteen need testers too?

Google's rule applies to Fourteen as well. Staying in its test for 14 days helps Fourteen reach production, while you test your own app in a group.

Daily testing

What's a cohort?

A cohort is your group's 14-day run. You test each other's apps every day until it finishes. Your profile shows how many cohorts you've joined and finished, and your reliability score appears after your first finished cohort.

How long does testing take each day?

In a full group, plan for about 30 minutes: roughly 2 minutes per app, every day for 14 days.

I missed a day. What happens?

A first miss gets a reminder, with no penalty. After that, every app you miss lowers your reliability score, even if you tested the others that day.

If you miss most of your apps for 3 days in a row or 4 days in total, skip the same app 3 days in a row or 4 days in total, or your score falls below 80%, a person reviews your place. Skipping one app day after day leaves its developer a tester short, even if you test everything else. They can remove you from the group, and then the group stops testing your app.

If something went wrong, you can appeal from the notice. A person reviews every appeal, and an approved appeal no longer counts against you.

How long should my daily tasks be?

About a minute. With the SDK, a day counts after 60 seconds of active use and 5 touches, so a much shorter task could leave a tester short. Ask for one clear action, like "Create a route and save it", rather than "Try every feature".

I can't test an app today. What should I do?

Open the app's task and say why you can't do it. You can skip up to 5 tests each cohort this way without it counting against you. After that, try the app anyway and send a note about what got in your way. If you can't install the app, the task also has steps to help.

An app won't show up on Google Play.

Check these in order:

  • You joined the Fourteen testers group with the Google account on your phone.
  • You opted in to the test, then looked for the app on Google Play.
  • The developer's release may still be in review. If so, tell them in your group chat.

If you still can't install it, tell us from the task so it doesn't count against you.

I tested an app, but it wasn't detected.

Give it a moment and reopen the app, because confirmation can take a little time. If it still isn't detected and you get a missed-day notice, appeal and choose I tested it, but it wasn't detected.

I'm not getting reminders.

Check that notifications are on for Fourteen in your phone's settings, and choose a reminder time in Fourteen's Settings. You'll also get a reminder at 8 PM if you still have apps left.

What if I opted out by accident?

Opt back in right away and tell the developer. Google restarts the count for a tester who opts out and back in, so it may affect their 14 days.

Your test

When does my group start?

The day after it fills. If your group fills today, day 1 starts at midnight, so join the testers group and get everyone's apps right away. You'll see the day 1 date in your group, and you can chat with the other developers while you wait.

Do I have to add the SDK?

No. Without it, testers send a daily screenshot instead. With it, use gets confirmed automatically, and you also get crash reports. See what it collects.

Why does Play Console show a different number than Fourteen?

They measure different things. Fourteen sees testing activity, and Play Console sees who has opted in. Fourteen can't see inside Play Console, so go by its count for Google's rule.

Can I test with friends and family instead?

Yes. Share your invite link. They don't need the Fourteen app or an account, and they come back to the same link each day they test.

Is feedback anonymous?

No. In a group, developers see which app your feedback came from. Invited testers aren't named.

Getting to production

Does Fourteen guarantee production access?

No. Google makes that decision, and nobody can promise it. Fourteen helps you run a real test and describe it accurately.

Does Fourteen write my production application?

It collects your feedback and fixes as you go, and can draft answers on request. Check and edit them, because AI can get details wrong and the application is yours.

Where can I read the whole process?

Our closed testing guide walks through it, step by step.

My app needs a login. What do I do?

Turn on Testers need to log in when you add your app, or later in App details, and add a test account or sign-up steps. Everyone testing your app can read this, so never use a real password.

How do I delete my account?

Open Settings in the app and choose Delete account, or delete it on the website. If you're in a group, your app leaves it.
